What does the word "chiropractic" mean?

Chiropractic is made from the combination of two old Greek words; "cheiro" –meaning THE HAND and "practikos" –meaning TO BE DONE. Therefore chiropractic means "to be done by the hand". This name was chosen by the founder of chiropractic, Dr Daniel David Palmer to describe this new healing approach he discovered in 1895

What is the principle behind chiropractic practice?

The central nervous system originates in the brain and extends down through the spinal column, reaching every part of the body influencing everything from body chemistry, organ function, muscle movement and even your immune system. The chiropractic profession has recognized since 1895 that interference of this nerve network would impair the body’s balance and induce disturbance and dis-ease. The major site of this interference is where the nerves exit and enter the spinal column and is due to misalignment of one or more the boney segments (vertebrae) pressing on the nerves and jamming up the joints.

How does a chiropractor correct the nerve interference?

As a "spinal specialist" your chiropractor will examine the spinal column with X-ray pictures, with instrumentation and physically for these misalignments (designated "subluxations"). Once found, he'll treat the subluxations by giving an adjustment using a low-force technique on his special state-of-the-art table establishing the correct alignment and thereby starting a course of care that will retrain the muscles and ligaments to help restore proper nerve supply, function and harmony to the body.

How much will it cost?

At risk of sounding non-committal, this is very difficult to answer until a preliminary examination takes place. Generally, you'll find Chiropractic care is far less costly than the alternative: continued spinal decay and the associated health problems.

What payment options do you have?

We have a variety of methods of payment including: Cash, check or personal Credit/Debit facilities (American Express/ Master card/Visa card/Debit card). In order to maintain our fees at or below those recommended by the Chiropractors Association payment is expected at the time of service.

Does it really work and is it safe?

Chiropractic adjustments are safer than aspirin, muscle relaxers and back surgery. Dozens of research studies have documented the safety and effectiveness of chiropractic adjustments. When compared with traditional approaches, chiropractic care is remarkably safe. In fact, millions of chiropractic adjustments ar safely delivered to satisfied patients every day!

Regardless of the technique, millions of patients have been delighted with the results of their chiropractic care since chiropractic was discovered in 1895.

How long will it take for me to get better?

Chiropractic results vary. Some patients get results quickly. Others find their recovery takes several months or longer. Children often respond quickly, while adults with long-standing spinal problems heal more slowly. The healing process takes time.

There are three stages of chiropractic care. Periodic progressive examinations help determine the course of your care. Once you understand true health, you may want some type of ongoing chiropractic care. Like brushing your teeth, eating wholesome foods, and other healthy habits, a regular chiropractic checkup makes sense. How long you decide to benefit from chiropractic care is always up to you.

Are Chiropractors well qualified?

Becoming a Doctor of Chiropractic requires a 5 year, full time university education with an emphasis in the biological sciences. Your Chiropractor has completed about the same number of lecture hours as medical practitioners have. However, since Chiropractors choose not to prescribe drugs or perform surgery their education emphasizes neurology, diagnostic imaging, physiology, spinal adjusting techniques and clinical subjects. Chiropractors are comprehensively educated.

What can I do to help?

You can get faster relief and better results from your chiropractic care by taking responsibility. Don't worry, it's not as hard as it sounds:

  • Get involved: Patients who get involved and assume personal responsibility for recovering their health often get better results.
  • Keep your appointments: The way to achieve the result millions of chiropractic patients have enjoyed is to keep your appointments.
  • Strengthen your spine: Your Chiropractor may suggest specific exercises to help speed your recovery. These can help retrain muscles that support your spine.
  • Lift with your legs: Improper lifting can invite a relapse. Keep your back straight and the load close to your body as you lift with your legs.
  • Avoid extreme bending: Use caution when bending or working overhead. Avoid sudden twists and turns.
  • Get adequate rest: Proper rest is an important aspect of the healing process. Use a mattress that offers firm support, and avoid sleeping on your stomach.
  • Watch your diet: During the healing process proper nutrition is more important than ever.
  • Ask questions: Proper spinal hygiene is new for most people. The better you understand your condition, the faster your recovery.
  • Refer others: Share your chiropractic experience with others. Explain the relationship between proper spinal function and nervous system function - the key to true health.
